Phase 3 – The Push and Pull of Perspective

Detail from the first chariot left wheelNow the building of reality begins with the first charioteer. The challenge when portraying an aspect of reality is to understand how to decode it in order to recode it, in a manner that is believable. My ability to recode reality, my understanding of the media I am using and the experience I have gained through taking on complex illusions, has enabled me to understand how to create the appearance of perspective and motion within it.

The beginning is always the hardest, it commands a lot of discipline of sight to see the depth of tone and what it means in the overall illusion, despite the rest of the illusion not yet existing. How disciplined and accurate my way of seeing is at this point saves some amount of time and tonal rebalancing when all aspects of the illusion are finally present.

At this stage it would be easy to be overwhelmed with all the elements to consider, so I must know where to place my focus, how much and at what time. Each element focused on provides and understanding and acts to question the appearance of elements that surround it.

There have been some major structural changes since Phase 2. The archways of the circus shown in the background have been redrawn, and are now in-tune with the perspective more accurately. It is unclear to me at this stage how much of the background will be completed. I will explore the impact of the archways on the overall illusion of movement and depth as the drawing progresses.

From now on all phases are consumed with a continuous reassessment process, where each element reflects surrounding elements. The layering must be meticulous and astute, the relationship with the whole can never be ignored.
